Overview of University Admissions

Applying to university, and especially to Oxbridge, can be a very confusing process. Here is a brief overview of what most university applications will look like:

1) Predicted grades

Year 12 is arguably one of the most important years in a student's pre-university academic career. Predicted grades are issued at the end of Year 12 or the beginning of Year 13 and are used as evidence of academic ability. Schools base predicted grades on a number of factors including performance in end of topic tests, homework, performance in class and end of year exams.

Therefore, it is very important that to get top predicted grades, students need to hit the ground running in Year 12. Our tutors are experienced in aiding students to achieve this.

2) Personal statement

The personal statement is a student's opportunity to show that aside from getting top grades across the board, they are also highly accomplished in other aspects and extracurricular activities such as sport, drama and music.

It is also their opportunity to convey their interest in the subject they are applying for and show what other opportunities they have sought out to develop their knowledge of the course outside of what they have been taught in school.

Remember that the personal statement is effectively an academic 'story' of how they became fascinated by the subject they are applying for. Let the Admissions Academy help with every step.

3) Entrance Exam

Many universities have entrance exams that are sat after the submission of the personal statement. The purpose of these entrance exams are to challenge the students who all have high predicted grades and are therefore necessary to distinguish the 'incredible' from the 'very good' applicants.

It is vital that you research whether your  course requires an entrance exam, and if so, start preparing as soon as possible! Whilst all elements of the application are important, this is a big part and should not be treated lightly.

This can be the hardest part of a university application. Luckily, our experienced tutors are here to help.

We have successfully tutored students for admission to the following universities

Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, MIT, Harvard, Southampton, Loughborough, Birmingham, St Andrews, Exeter, Bristol, Bath, and many more.
